LEMORANDUM REGARDING THE USUAL TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

AND SERVICE OF HOME-APPOINTED HISTRESSES IN THE

HONG KONG EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.

Candidates for the post of mistress must be

umarried and it must be clearly understood that any mistress who marries whether during her probationary period or after transfer to the permanent staff will be required to resign from the service and, except for the gratuity mentioned below, will forfeit all rights to passages, salary on voyage and pension. Further if a mistress leaves the service for this reason during her probationary period she will be required to refund to the Government the cost of her passage to the Colony. If however resignation on or with a view to marriage takes place after transfer to the permanent establishment and completion of 5 years service, the mistress may be granted a gratuity calculated at the rate of one month's salary for each completed year of service or 12 months' salary

whichever sum is the less.

Mistresses are appointed on a three years' agreement at a salary of £300 for the 1st, £320 for the 2nd and £340 for the 3rd year. Under the compensation scheme at present in force these suns are paid in dollars at a rate which varies with the rate of exchange in accordance with

the following scale:-

When exchange is at or over 4s.4d.

When exchange is at or over 4s. and below 4s.4d.

$10.30

Then exchange is at or over 3s.8d. and below 48.

$10.60

When exchange is at or over 3s.4d. and below 38.8d.

$10.90

When exchange is at or over 3s.

and below 38.4d.
